Frame: Presented in a later swept giltwood frame.
Signature: Lower right and dated 1862.
Provenance: Colin’s Antiques, Bedford (label verso). The price tag at this gallery was £4,250.
Condition: Painting and frame are both in good condition. Fine craquelure throughout and the canvas has been lined.
Measurements: Painting measures 44 x 35cm and the overall frame 59x 50cm.
Biography: William Crosby (1830-1910) was one of the leading artists in Sunderland and worked mostly in the north east of England. The son of a local inn keeper he was a painter of genre, landscapes and coastal scenes. He has paintings in museums.
