FRITZ WAGNER
“The Discussion”
An expertly painted oil on canvas antique painting by Fritz Wagner (1836-1939) entitled “The Discussion” depicting 3 men in earnest conversation. Some discarded playing cards on on the side table. This artist is well known for his ability to capture real detail in the characters to an extent that you can almost feel their personalities.
Works by this artist often sell for very high prices at auction. Some examples are included at the end of the photos.
Frame: Presented in the original gilt wood frame.
Signature: Lower right.
Provenance: Hampel Auction, 3rd December 2010, Lot 545. Exhibition label on reverse
Condition: Painting and frame are both in very good condition.
Measurements: Painting measures 77 x 67cm and the overall frame 94 x 84cm.
Biography: Fritz Wagner (1896-1939) was a painter of still life, landscapes and genre scenes usually with cavaliers. He was born in Zurich on 20 July 1896 and travelled throughout Europe. Wagner studied at the Academie de la Brera de Milan.
Both his beautifully crafted interiors and highly detailed figures contribute to a winning recipe.
To each figure he gave a different character enabling the viewer to read into the situation presented.
