Biography: The artist was born in London, the son of Thomas Edward Roberts. Between 1862-1886 he regularly exhibited at Suffolk Street, and at the Royal Academy (1882-1884) where he was an instant success. Roberts regularly used children as his subjects, and he would portray them in an almost comic manner. This style proved enormously popular with the Victorian public of the day, and his work is still widely admired.
