EDWIN THOMAS ROBERTS
“My Favourite Model”

A striking oil on canvas painting of a beautiful nude young lady by Edwin Thomas Roberts (1840-1917) entitled “My Favourite Model”.  She has long flowing brown hair and brown eyes, and is partially covered by a pink sheet.

Frame:  Presented in a fine, stepped, gilt wood frame.

Signature:  Lower right.

Provenance:  James D. Julia Auctioneers, May 2008, Lot 589.  Old, partial labels on the reverse.

Condition:  Painting and frame are both in good condition. Canvas has been lined.

Measurements:  Painting measures 60 x 45cm and the overall frames 73 x 58cm.

Biography:  The artist was born in London, the son of Thomas Edward Roberts. Between 1862-1886 he regularly exhibited at Suffolk Street, and at the Royal Academy (1882-1884) where he was an instant success. Roberts regularly used children as his subjects, and he would portray them in an almost comic manner. This style proved enormously popular with the Victorian public of the day, and his work is still widely admired.
