“Lady With Shawl”

A charming oil on canvas painting of a young lady in an interior by Edwin Thomas Roberts (1840-1917).  She is wearing a shawl and a white bonnet.

Frame:  Presented in a pierced swept giltwood frame.

Signature:  Lower left and dated 1872.

Provenance:  UK private collection.

Condition:  Painting and frame are both in good condition. There are a few scattered spots of re-touching visible under a blacklight.

Measurements:  Painting measures 35 x 29cm and the overall frames 50 x 44cm.

Biography:  The artist was born in London, the son of Thomas Edward Roberts. Between 1862-1886 he regularly exhibited at Suffolk Street, and at the Royal Academy (1882-1884) where he was an instant success. Roberts regularly used children as his subjects, and he would portray them in an almost comic manner. This style proved enormously popular with the Victorian public of the day, and his work is still widely admired.
