A fine oil on canvas portrait by Christopher Steele (1733-1768) of Miss Bache; half length and wearing a pink dress with beautifully detailed embroidery.

Frame: Set in a decorative giltwood frame.
Provenance: Sotheby’s 07 Jul 2011, Lot #305. Sotheby’s 13 Jul 1994, Lot #52
Condition: Painting and frame are both in good condition. The canvas has been lined and there is some re-touching on her arms and in the lower margin. These is some rubbing in the lower margin.
Measurements: Painting measures 75 x 60cm and the overall frame 92 x 76cm.
Biography: Christopher Steele (1733-1767) was a portrait painter and studied in Paris under Van Loo and the English painter Wright. He settled in York and then Kendal, where he had a number of students. George Romney studied under him in Cumbria.
