JOHAN FREDERIK CORNELIUS SCHERREWITZ ‘Shellfisher’

A beautiful canvas oil painting by Johan Scherrewitz presented in a guilded frame. A classic Scherrewitz scene depicting a shellfisher at the beach with his horse and cart, he travelled extensively to the eastern and southern regions of Holland producing numerous sketches, but he excelled in depicting scenes showing the traditional craft of the coastal dwellers as they worked on the beaches and among the dunes along the North Sea coastline.

Provenance: Exhibited: Kunsthandel Rococo, Margraten. Acquired by the family of the present owner in 1999.

Condition: Reclined (Wax), a few small retouching in the sky and in the lower right corner. Otherwise in very good condition.

Biography:Born in Amsterdam in 1868, he was a member of the St. Luke’s Academy in Amsterdam and the ‘Arti et Amicitiae’, a society of visual artists and art lovers founded in 1839. Scherrewitz’s reputation spread beyond the shores of his native Holland and he exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in 1907, in Liverpool in 1909 and at The Royal Scottish Academy in 1916. His work would have had particular resonance with Scottish artists of the period who were highly influenced by the artists of the Hague School. He excelled in depicting scenes showing the traditional craft of the coastal dwellers as they worked on the beaches and among the dunes along the North Sea coastline which can be seen in some other examples of his work (pictured).
